The Greenwood Genetic Center, a not-for-profit institution, is a leader in the delivery of genetic services, committed to:

  • Diagnosing genetic conditions;

  • Counseling individuals and families and supporting their health care providers;

  • Researching the causes of genetic disease;

  • Educating health care providers, teachers and the public about genetics.

In 1974, the Greenwood Genetic Center, a world-class genetic research, education, clinic and laboratory facility, began with a focus on providing the most up-to-date answers for critical genetic questions to reduce the risk and severity of disabling conditions.

The JC Self Research Institute of Human Genetics, which opened in 1996, takes a leading role in genetic research in South Carolina. Scientists seek a greater understanding of the causes, treatment and prevention of birth defects and mental retardation, and are dedicated to leading-edge high-tech research that sets the standards for the world in human genetics. Whether mapping part of the vast unknown areas of the human genome, studying the effects of a single gene gone awry or putting into practice a strategy for families to avoid hereditary disease, scientists at the Institute hope their work will bring the next generation closer to the goal of having all babies born healthy and free of physical and mental disabilities.

In 1999, the South Carolina Biotechnology Incubation Facility, a 22,000-sq-ft west wing addition to the JC Self Research Institute of Human Genetics, was established. The facility houses six laboratory modules and related office space, which are available for defined periods of time to promising graduate-level projects and companies. The building also includes a library and video-conferencing facility. Economically viable projects will have the opportunity to spin-off into separate operations in the surrounding Biotechnology Park.
